Hidden Treasure

...and a graveyard, too

sideJulian found these crammed in among the typical general clutter of a garage in the Ardennes region of France while doing the GRM Mille Rivieres this past week - we're pretty sure we know the place: tell us, Julian, was it the only garage in the area selling fuel into the night, staying open late because of the Mille Rivieres? There were a good dozen or so Jeeps in there when we first called (must have been ten years ago now) and I remember the prices he quoted being quite steep even in those days, and he did insist there were some "real" Jeeps in there among the odd Hotchkiss or two. Julian suspects the rusting remains out in the yard are Willys rather than Hotchkiss, and we think he's right - we don't think Hotchkiss ever made a hardtop! It's a bit sad seeing the old warhorses in such a sorry state, but I guess we can take some comfort in believing that they may have donated engines and other mechanical components to keep other Jeeps alive. Real Jeeps or not, it's good to know that there's a little stock of restorable veterans hidden away in the depths of rural France; certainly the GPW plate on one of the better-condition cars indoors looks genuine enough. Thanks for the pics and info, Julian - and thanks for including the garage address, which will undoubtedly be of interest to many an enthusiast looking for a project car to help swell the ranks of active historic flatfenders - Jean-Pierre Naud, Specialist Jeep US, 48250 La Bastide, France.
